Thomas Brinkmann - Studio 1 - Variationen (1997)

This first release by Thomas Brinkmann occupies a very extreme position in the world of recorded music. There are no melodies. There is no reverb. There are just a few choice percussive sounds that play in the right channel and are almost exactly mimicked in the left channel, a half second later. That they don't line up perfectly is the essence of the effect, and the imperfections create a strangely soothing sound moiré. I find this record to be very comforting, like a warm, rhythmic groundplate. One of my all-time favorites.

Team 4 - Ich Hab' Ihr Ins Gesicht Gesehen / Der Abend Ist Gekommen (1967)

East German 7" release with some classic psych sounds, on the official GDR label, Amiga. The harpsichord intro on the A side sets up a nice baroque groove, but the ridiculous rubber-guitar solos break this away from pure genre conventions. The B side starts out much more somberly, but picks up towards the halfway mark and makes a break back for baroquesville.

I love how not-psychedelic the cover photo is on this. They hardly even look goofy!

Relaxing  yet very engaging, atypical electronica from Japan. This is full of variety track to track and just REALLY good. Many of the tracks consist of looping samples that gently wash ashore; acoustic instruments such as chimes, maracas,  wood blocks, piano, and ukulele. Other tracks are entirely synthetic.

Peach and Lee - Hold On, It's Better 7" (1970's)

Amazing Badfinger-esque power pop out of Omaha from Arlis Peach and Larry Lee, in their sole release as Peach and Lee. The release date is estimated to be anywhere between 1971-1974. There was a full album recorded that was shelved, and it seems possible this single was only ever released as a promo. Arlis later released the single "No Way Baby" for Kansas City's Titan Records under the name Arlis!. The exclamation point helps distinguish him from all the other Arlises releasing power pop singles that year.

One And Poli - Catch A Bat (1985)

Extremely listenable art/collage/ambience, along the line of Woo, Sack und Blumm, and maybe some of the stuff on Fun Records, like Philip Perkins and Scott Fraser. Occasional vocals remind me a bit of Slapp Happy. The album is from 1985, and I think it was their only release, though the press sheet mentions another in the works. The two members are artists, Peter Bosch and Simone Simons, who have continued to work together as Bosch & Simons. There is a lot of further information on their website, but no mention of this album that I could find. However, the press release insert gives a good bio and details about the grounding of the music. It describes it like this:

On their first record, "One and Poli Catch a Bat," they have successfully woven together western Hi-tec with a bizarre collection of, for want of a better name, 'sound generators.' The use of computer and synthesizer together with ethnic instruments, home-made percussion, and voice have resulted in an atmospheric, sometimes mystical sound unique to themselves.

The record was released by Gerrit Rietveld Academy, and was part of Simons' final exam project.

Home-made Psychedelic Sound & Music Collage (Ovipositor Mix, 1994)

Here's a trippy mix I assembled on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder in 1994. It's a collage of spacey sounds and odd pieces of music that flow from one location to another with the express intent of aiding mind-expansion. You may recognize a few of the samples I used. Sounds pretty good after all these years!
